Product Authenticity and Care Guidelines

Welcome to the world of Brasstales.com. Our collection celebrates the timeless luxury, whimsical character, and enduring strength of genuine brass. Each piece is crafted to tell a story and serve as an heirloom for generations to come. Because true brass interacts naturally with its environment, we have provided these guidelines to help you understand its unique characteristics and care for your pieces beautifully.

1. Guarantee of Authenticity

Every product offered on Brasstales.com is crafted using premium, heavy-grade solid brass or authentic brass alloy. We do not deal in lightweight plastic imitations or cheap metallic painted alternatives. When you lift a Brasstales piece—whether it is a storybook mouse candle holder or an equestrian sculpture you will instantly feel the substantial, satisfying weight of genuine craftsmanship.

2. Understanding Artisan Characteristics

Many of our items feature hand-carved details, intricate engraving, or old-world sand-casting methods. Because of this artisan touch, minor surface nuances, subtle color variations, tiny pitting marks, or microscopic casting irregularities are completely normal.

These elements are not structural defects; rather, they are the unique “fingerprints” of hand-forged art that distinguish your premium piece from generic, machine-stamped assembly line decor.

3. The Nature of Brass: Tarnish & Patina

Genuine brass naturally oxidizes when exposed to oxygen, humidity, and the ambient oils on human hands. Over time, it will gradually develop a deeper, richer hue known as a patina.

  • The Antique Look: Many collectors prefer this darkening, as it adds depth, historical character, and highlighting to engraved patterns.
  • The Bright Look: If you prefer a brilliant, mirror-like golden reflection, the natural tarnish can be easily polished away to restore the metal’s original glow.

4. Routine Cleaning & Maintenance

To maintain the premium finish of your brass decor without scratching the metal, follow these care steps:

  • Dusting: Use a clean, dry, ultra-soft microfiber cloth for regular dusting. Avoid coarse fabrics which can leave micro-scratches over time.
  • Light Cleaning: If a piece accumulates smudges or fingerprints, wipe it down using a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water and a drop of mild, pH-neutral dish soap. Dry the piece thoroughly with a separate cloth immediately—never leave water to air-dry on brass, as it can cause permanent water spots.
  • Chemical Warning: Never use harsh chemical cleaners, industrial window sprays, ammonia, vinegar, or abrasive scouring pads. These aggressive materials can permanently strip protective lacquers or corrode the brass surface.

5. Restoring the Golden Shine

If your unlacquered brass items have darkened and you wish to bring back their bright gold appearance, use a specialized, gentle commercial metal polish (such as Brasso, Wright’s Brass Polish, or Cape Cod cloths). Apply a tiny amount to a soft cloth, rub gently along the contours of the design, and buff to a high shine with a separate clean cloth.

Pro-Tip: If a piece has a detailed or dark recessed engraving, polish gently over the top surface so you do not accidentally remove the dark accent lines that give the artwork its contrast.

6. Candle Holder & Safety Guidelines

For whimsical candle stands and functional lighting decor, safety and structural care are essential:

  • Wax Removal: Never use sharp knives, metal scrapers, or screwdrivers to gouge out hardened candle wax, as this will permanently scratch the metal. Instead, run warm water over the wax to soften it, or place the piece in the freezer for an hour the cold will cause the wax to shrink and pop out cleanly.
  • Heat Exposure: Do not allow candles to burn completely down to the very bottom of the brass socket. Extreme, direct flame heat can heat the heavy metal significantly or damage underlying furniture surfaces.
